April is Here, at Last!

The newest (and smallest) calf...

April has been a ZOO!!!!  Baby calves, garden starts, fencing, morels,  and to start things off on April 1st,  Savannah got her wisdom teeth removed!

Where to even begin?  March ended like a lamb.  Savannah got "I" ratings on her horn solo as well as her two voice solos.  She goes to Columbia at the end of the month to perform again at State competitions.  Speaking of horn, found her a used Conn on eBay and when it arrived we all groaned in despair.  It was a "bargain..."  Sent it to the "Horn Doctor" and after some discussion, he did a bang up job, considering what he had to start with.  Savannah now has a horn for school and Pep Band and I won't loose sleep over her "fancy horn" at school...

Calf count is even- bulls and heifers...  Dill, Heidi and Surabhi are heifers; Cork and two more fellas from Hammer and JuJu finish off.  Not a black baby in the mix- all dun or red...  JuJu's baby wins "smallest calf award" so far.  He is right petite.

Garden starts need to be planted but the threat of frost won't be gone until closer to May...  We need rain something fierce right now.  Ground is cracking and the grass should be growing faster...  Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, herbs, cukes, melons, artichokes and assorted others await their planting.

Glenn got the upper 40 cleared along the fenceline and we have begun to run the perimeter fence.  Hot work, ticks aplenty!  Glenn did get the worst part done- the manual labor clearing the overgrown brush.

True Grit Aspen joined our Dexter family.  This 15 year old cow and her bull calf, by our Ace, needed a new home.  She is great-grandmother to Gertrude, one of our heifers and has relations to several of our cows.  Hoping she will have a few more calves- she looks great for her age and is in a paddock now with Valinor...  That would be a great heifer!

We sold out of our Kiko-blooded does and kids (Thank you, Mike!) and have even presold the yet unweaned January goat kids.  Pedro and Jose are in with the girls now for Fall kidding.

Click on the link below to see Savannah's solo from the other night.  She did great, the photographer needs to do a better job-  For those of you not on high speed internet, it may take a few minutes to load up...

Until later!  Happy April!~
